Common questions
What size rug do I need for my patio seating area?
Measure the full seating group, sofa to chairs, then add about 6 in on every side so a border of rug shows all round. For a standard sofa with two chairs and a coffee table that usually lands on an 8 by 10 or a 9 by 12. The mistake almost everyone makes is buying a 5 by 8, which floats under the coffee table and makes the group look unmoored rather than pulled together.
How much walking clearance should I leave around outdoor furniture?
Thirty inches is the working rule for any route people actually walk, and it is what this tool checks by default. You can drop to about 24 in for a secondary gap, such as between a sofa and a coffee table, and between 14 and 18 in is right for the space from a seat to the table in front of it. Around a dining table, allow 36 in behind each chair so people can push back and stand up.
Should furniture legs be on or off an outdoor rug?
All legs on looks the most deliberate and works when the patio is big enough to leave a border of rug showing. Front legs on is the common compromise: the rug tucks about a foot under the front of each seat, which anchors the group with a smaller and cheaper rug. What to avoid is a rug that touches nothing but the coffee table, since it reads as an island rather than a floor for the seating.

Know the surface before you furnish it
A layout only works if the patio underneath it is the size you think it is. Work out the slab or the pavers first, then come back and place the furniture.
