Packaging usually quotes a diameter, so a light rated up to 8 ft has a 4 ft radius. Spacing at about 1.5 times the radius keeps the circles overlapping at their edges without the bright and dark strobe you get from setting them too far apart.

Common questions
How far apart should solar path lights be spaced?
Six to eight feet suits most walkways. Widen to eight or ten feet if you only want a suggestion of the path edge, and tighten to four or six feet where you want it genuinely bright underfoot. Garden bed borders can sit closer, three to five feet, because the fixtures are doing decorative work as much as lighting. If you know the rated spread, spacing at about 1.5 times the radius lands in the right place on its own.
Do solar path lights work well in shaded areas?
Not really. A panel needs roughly four to six hours of direct sun to charge for a full evening. Under trees, against a north facing wall, or in winter shade you get dimmer light that quits before midnight. Your options are fixtures with larger panels and higher capacity batteries, models with a remote panel you can site in a sunnier spot, or low voltage wired lights through the shaded stretch with solar kept for the open sections.
Should lights on both sides of a path be staggered or aligned?
Both work. Mirrored pairs look formal and deliberate, which suits a straight front walk to a door. Staggering, which offsets one row by half a spacing, spreads the light more evenly along the path and reads as more natural, so it tends to suit curving garden paths. Staggering also lets each side sit slightly wider apart for the same coverage.
Why does the tool change my spacing slightly?
Your target rarely divides evenly into the path. Rather than leave an awkward short gap at one end, the count is rounded to the nearest whole fixture and the spacing recalculated so the run is even from the first light to the last. The number shown as the spacing you will actually set is the one to measure on the ground.
